Bobby Jenks, a two-time All-Star closer who recorded the last out of the 2005 World Series, died Friday in Sintra, Portugal, from complications due to adenocarcinoma. He was 44.
Mr. Jenks announced his diagnosis from a hospital bed in Sintra via Major League Baseball in February, vowing to fight his stomach cancer.
Mr. Jenks pitched seven seasons in MLB, six with the White Sox. He was forced to retire after a botched surgery on his back in 2012, while a member of the Red Sox. He finished his career with a 16-20 record, 173 saves, a 3.53 ERA and 351 strikeouts in 357.1 innings pitched.
A tragic end to a promising career and now a tragic end to his young life. Rest In Peace.
